On the 10th September, the Somerset Churches Trust will be holding our annual ‘Ride & Stride‘ fund raising event and this year I’m proposing to walk from Blackford to Ilchester visiting the 13 churches predominantly along the route of the ‘Leyland Trail’.
The distance is approximately 10.75 miles as the crow flies between the churches although, as you will appreciate, the route deviates quite considerably from the straight and narrow. I intend to start at 9.00 am at the church of the Holy Trinity, Blackford visiting St Mary’s, Compton Pauncefoot; St Thomas a Becket, South Cadbury; Holy Trinity, Sutton Montis; Holy Cross, Weston Bamfylde; St Mary Magdalene, Sparkford; St Barnabas, Queen Camel; All Saints, West Camel; St Bartholomew, Yeovilton and the BVM, Limington before reaching St Mary Major at Ilchester.
Anyone wishing to join me on this challenge will be most welcome to do so and I would look forward to your company. However, in view of the distances involved, a ‘drop in and drop out’ system for anyone wishing to do just part of the route is perfectly acceptable provided transport can be arranged. This really is a splendid walk ‘in our own back yard’ so to speak.
The object of the day is to raise much needed funds to enable the Somerset Churches Trust to continue the important work of providing grants for the repair or adaptation of the churches and chapels in Somerset. If you would be agreeable to sponsor me then your donations will be very gratefully received. Cheques should be made payable to ‘The Somerset Churches Trust’ and forwarded to me at ‘Cider Cottage’ Church Hill, Sutton Montis BA22 7HE.
I look forward to hearing from you, to enjoying your company and to receiving your support.
