With the imminent departure to pastures new of Den Cooper, the very long standing and much respected Tower Captain of ST Andrews Church, Corton Denham I find myself having very big shoes to fill.
I also have a minor problem in that we have five bells in the tower and only five active ringers, so am struggling to get a full team together on practice nights and Sunday services. Hence this plea for HELP!!! The team need to recruit and train new blood, or coax back any ringers that are having a career break.
We practice on a Thursday evening, commencing at 7:30pm and usually retiring to the pub at about 8:30pm(optional). All are welcome to pop in to see a practice any Thursday you hear the bells ringing. Please call me if you can before coming along as room is limited in the tower and I have to control the numbers for safety reasons. I am anticipating a surge of interest and hordes of eager, potential campanologists turning up to watch us at work.
If you want to have a bash at ringing a tuition session, at a date and time which suits you, can be arranged outside of the routine team practice sessions. No fee or special equipment required, we will lend you a tower, bell and rope free of charge. You will need to bring a sense of humour and some patience. Like riding a bike, it takes a little while to get the hang of it but once learned you never lose the knack.
Unfortunately we can’t accept young ringers as I don’t have the necessary child protection clearances.
If you fancy joining the team to learn and take part in the ancient art of Change Ringing please get in touch. It is primarily a social activity with the added privilege of serving the community by ringing for church services. Give it a try, what have you got to lose?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind Regards, Duncan Skeates
